Which Radiant Floor Heating Option is Best for You?
At first a newcomer to the radiant floor heating market may be overwhelmed with the countless choices available. It’s easy to get lost in the vast amounts of information available and the varying technologies and heat cables you can purchase. A tried and true rule of thumb is to investigate which manufacturers have been around the longest. This usually means they are seasoned, hold valuable amounts of information and technology at their fingertips, and have already done a lot of research on the consumer’s behalf when it comes to radiant floor heating. Your desire for warm floors in your home is their bottom line. So it pays for them to have your best interests at heart as well as their own. Identify which manufacturers have a good track record and a long history of production and sales. One of the longest standing manufacturers is Danfoss and they are a good place to start. You can read more about their offerings here. The important thing is to take your time, make informed decisions and value what other customers have to say about specific manufacturers. As we dive into the winter months we turn our thoughts to staying warm. Thoughts of fireplaces and furnaces dance through our heads. Another way of feeling warm all over is through the use of under floor heating systems.
Radiant floor heating comes in two general forms. Electric, which is the more common form, uses a radiant heating cable in mesh (such as Danfoss LX cable) that is installed under the finish surface. Tile is quite common and provides an excellent surface material for underfloor heating. Radiant floor heating is also applied to wood floors. The other form of radiant floor heating is hydronic, which uses water flowing through tubing installed under the finished surface. Electric radiant heat systems are generally considered easier and less expensive to install, and are therefore more common. It's hard to explain how much more comfortable it is to walk around on a heated floor in the cold winter months. If you are considering a remodel of your bathroom or even kitchen, consider underfloor heating for your upgrade. It may not be on the plans but your comfort level will be upgraded as well. Ask your friends or anyone who might work in a building where underfloor heating is used. If you have felt it you will want it. There's no reason why radiant floor heating systems shouldn't become as popular as forced air systems. |
Warm Up to Warm Floors
I can move seamlessly from carpet, to tile, to hardwood and still enjoy the benefits of my floor heat. It makes those early, frosty mornings just a bit more bearable. Family gatherings are sublime as well, as my guests can kick their boots off at the door, grab a steaming cup of hot chocolate and enjoy the luxury of my affordable electric radiant heat while we benefit from the comfort it provides and the warm floors throughout the home. |
There are several radiant floor heating
systems on the market today, each with their own
designed application. Wanting warm floors for your
home is a good place to start, but then how do you know
which floor heating system is best for your
situation? The best place to start is by doing
some well-informed research. Make a list of what you
expect your radiant floor heating system to
accomplish. Which areas of your home or building
project are going to need coverage? Once you
have a good list in place, you can begin your research on
typical floor heating systems and what they offer.
We don’t often
think of these methods when we decide how to heat our homes,
but times are changing. Floor heating systems are a
great way to stay comfortable. Walking on a heated
tile floor is more cozy than walking on a regular cold
floor. If you haven’t experienced this, you need to.
On the heels of a wonderful Thanksgiving
weekend, I’ve taken some time to explore what
I’m truly grateful for: family, friends, food, and
floor heat. Those are the four essentials in life,
right? I guess shelter is in there too. So I’ll
add my warm home to that list as it certainly
surrounds and protects the aforementioned essentials. Living
in a cold climate all my life, there have been years I
may have taken warmth for granted. But this year as I
slip my feet out of bed, wrap myself in a blanket and
tromp down the hall, I recognize the beauty of electric
radiant heat in floors. I love how smart my warm floors are
too. They can be programmed to warm up just as
I’m wiping the sleepers out of my eyes, so that
by the time my feet touch the ground the floor temperatures
are right where I want them to be. No fuss, no muss,
just warmth.
